Hello everyone, I have a 79 that I just bought and I'm trying to find out what I need to replace to make this work! sorry if this has been asked and I'm sure it has but I tried the search function and can't really seem to find what I need to do. I have cold air coming out of the floor vents and warm air coming out of the dash vents? Do I need a new control panel? Do I need the accuator swith on top of the control unit? or is there another switch somewhere? And yes I'm getting a owners manual its on the way..I'm lost please help my wife is driving me nuts on this thing!!
The first thing you need to do is check the vacuum hoses making sure they're not leaking and are hooked up properly. It's generally a hose problem but not always. Dr. Rebuild has hose kits if needed and also provides hose schematics for the hoses. An owners manual will not help you with this. What you need is the GM shop manual.

Ok so even if the vents switch from defrost to vent and cycles through high low there is still a vacuum problem? I remember hearing that there was a vacuum selector switch on the firewall or on the unit is this true?

Yes, I'd say you have a vacuum problem. The parts are the a/c and heater control panel switch, vacuum control switch, and the hoses. Remove the cover for the switch and you'll have access to these parts. I wouldn't complicate this. Check the hoses first.
