I have a 79 with which I'm sure everyone on this forum knows has a fastback or non-working hatchback. Some of the black paint is slowly chipping off the black trim on the rear of the vette. I wanted to know if there was a way to remove the black paint without scratching the metal surface of the trim. I was told it would be impossible. I've used my finger nail a few times and chipped some of the paint off but to do the whole trim would take decades and 100s of finger nails. So what can I do to take off the black paint quick and safely *Safely to my Vette of course!*?
Re: Removing paint from the window trims (fontking1a)
I used chemical stripper on my font windshield moldings. Just mask off both sides and use the gel type stripper. What you are left with is semi-shiny metal which you can then buff out to a chrome like appearence.

A plastic putty spreader can fill in for fingernails sometime. How about heavy duty rubbing compound? Either way, probably not a wipe on wipe off project :smash:
Re: Removing paint from the window trims (Phoenix79)
Use a gell stripper as mentioned earlier but the taping is the important part. Use a quality tape and make sure you give yourself some ahh sh@# room. Nothing like leaning against the car with that little bit of gell on the old shirt sleeve. :cry :cry
Re: Removing paint from the window trims (Phoenix79)
I sucessfully stripped the paint off my molding by first using a 3" wide masking tape. I folded the edge of the tape over about 1" forming a non sticky edge. Using a blunt putty knife i was able to tuck this non sticky edge under the molding on the windshiel side. The remaining 2" of sticky tape held paper in place over the glass for the painting process. The top portion where the trim meets the chrome... I masked off the stardard way. Using a terrycloth towel, I wrapped it around my index finger and sprayed brake cleaner on it. The brake cleaner took a little rubbing, but all the trim paint came off. After a little buffing with 00 steel wool, I covered the rest of the winshield, hood, interior etc.. with paper and sprayed away. Also used a semi gloss clear top coat to protect the trim paint. Turned out beautiful!
Hope this gives you ideas

I found that taking the trim off, then using cptn. Lees spray and strip or good ole laquer thiner and a scotch brite will clean it off. I put bumper primer on and then shot black gloss on. You need a window trim removing tool (see your auto parts people). It s alot easer than all that taping :chevy
