The 40s are quite loud. The 50s I was pleased with. I don't run them anymore due to a custom system from ARH. I have sold the pipes and mufflers yet to be put on. Everyone complains of a drone I never noticed it.
I have borlas on now, not sure the model type or series, it came on the car when I bought it, they sound good. They have a deep sound but more loud than anything, I'd just like something with a little more tone
I got 50 series, love the sound no issues with drone, how ever, I think they choke a little power and plan on putting dumps between the headers and the pipes and sooner or later going to a straight through muffler like dynamax or MagnaFlow.
I had dynomax (Walker) super turbos back int he day--loved the sound, no drone, and nice and loud when you mash your foot tot he floor, but otherwise, "civilized!"
I will be putting a pair on my '77 vette in the not too distant future
All of our exhausts have a nice smooth, deep tone, but as you suggest, they aren't much louder than a stock system at idle and at cruise. However, the volume increases dramatically and the tone gets a bit more aggressive when you open up the throttle. That's true both of our individual universal mufflers and entire exhaust systems.
I had flowmasters on my C4 back in the day. Yes, it had some drone but it didn't bother me. I got all kinds of compliments on the way it sounded. From outside the car I think flowmasters have the nicest tone.
I have Flowmaster 40 (42541) In idle they sound nice. Also on the highway.
But between 1400-1700RPM they "rattle/sound like resonance", mayby that is what "drone" means?
I hate it, I want to find so other mufflers ASAP. Please advice.

Wick, I got FM's Super 44's. On the louder side, but they sound really tuff. Remember, the sound/tone of the exhaust depends mostly on what you got under the hood as well as a true dual exhaust with headers and no emissions crap. A stock engine not gonna sound nearly as good with the same muffler vs. a modded, heads, cam, intake, compression, etc.
Also when my exhaust shop mounted my pipes, they were telling me the vibration and or drone maybe, can be the result of what type of hangers/bushings they use and locations of the mounts underneath the car.
