battery compartment hoses?

battery compartment hoses?
HI, I took my battery out today and there are two hoses in the compartment. They go through the floor but I don't see what they connect to. Does anyone know what function these are supposed to have? This is on a 74 convertible. Thanks, Wells :confused:

On the old batteries that were not maint. free they vented the battery gases out of the passenger compartment. They hooked into special caps that vented the gas from the battery down and out of the car. With a maint. free battery these are not needed.

When I got my 74 I still had one of the old type batteries in it. The hoses weren't connected (I later found out) and you wouldn't believe the rotten smell in the car if you kept the windows closed.
