Anyone know the smog laws for 1974? I just had headers installed, and I'm trying to figure out where to get it smogged, and what sort of test I need. (Test only/sniff test...) I know it's usually on the renewal form, but my form never came. I have until the end of the month to smog it
Not sure about the sniffer test but Federal law states that it is illegal to remove any emmisions equipment that a vehicle was originally sold with whether or not it is tested.
Since you have a '74, you don;t have the dreaded 2-1-2 exhaust with a catlytic converter. Headers should be OK as long as they they have the required fittings. If you have an AIR pump, you need headers with AIR fittings. They are out there but cost $$$.
Yep, you need a smog check. The type depends partly on the area you live in, there is a stricter test in some areas that have pollution problems. In some areas under "Smog Check II" they put your car on a dynometer type thing and run it at various speeds to check the output. (Emissions not horsepower unfortunately.) I am no expert on '74's but I can't see why the headers would effect the sniff test unless in installing them you disconnected the AIR system which pumped air into you exhaust manifold. Assuming you can pass the sniff, you still have to pass the visual test, meaning the technician checks to see that everything is there and not altered - you may have a problem. But...don't panic. You may be smog exempt after this test as there is a rolling exemption for cars 30 years and older so... you may need to put the original stuff back on to pass, get through smog and then go full bore. What you may want to do is take it in and go for the test but be prepared to put it back to original if you fail. Guess why I know so much about this... :cry
If the headers you installed are 50 state legal (meaning they have the AIR injection tubes) then your fine. If not you may need to reinstall your stock manifolds to be legal. If the 74 is not your daily driver then you may be able to get some sort of classic exemption. In Illinois your car has to be 25 years old to be eligible for this exemption, in California I have no idea, especially with the smog ****'s (internal cumbustion engine haters) out there.
The first thing they will do is look under the hood ... and under the car to do the visual inspection. Every stock smog item better be there or you'll fail even before they hook up the sniffer. If you get past that... they'll test for emissions, timing, and emission controls function. If you get past that then you've made it. But only for the next two years.
