I have a 69 convertible with a 406 small block and 255 tires on all 4 corners.
I had a Steeroids manual rack and pinion conversion put it last summer.
The problem is, the unit is flexing while turning the wheel, even though it's all tight.
My entire firewall actually MOVES when I turn the wheel. You can see the matter cylinder move.
The Steering shaft makes some crazy angles to get down to the unit.
Did I make a mistake going with the manual unit?
What I'm trying to figure out here is whether I have an install problem, or if the torque needed to turn the 255's is just too much for the entire system.
I need new tires anyway, so I'm at a crossroads as to wheatear or motto go down to 225's in the front, or just upgrade to the power unit.
I have a stock system, so cannot comment on the effectiveness of the Steerriods system, but most guys love them, that being said, the comment about seeing the firewall move, I would check to make sure there are no structural issues, cracked welds, corrosion that hurt structural integrity. PS was an option in those early days and Manual steering cars are still out there running around with no issues. Tire size in MO should not be an issue. Happy hunting!
