Default Power steering flow

What kind of circulation should I be seeing in reservoir with car idling and steering wheel either stationary or turning left and right.
Thanks in advance for your help.

You won't see any fluid movement.

Thanks, guess that leaves me with having to set up a gauge to check for pressure. Only other way I can think of to test pump output.

you can check pressure pretty easily with fittings and a liquid filled hydraulic pressure gauge from the hardware store, but you really need to measure flow. You'll need to rig up some way to hold 3 gallons of fluid and measure output.

Have you read the power steering tech papers from Jim Shea yet? That's where I would start...

Good advice Mel.
Problem is I have lost my power steering.
Fluid level is good, lifted front end no bind in steering, no leaks in system
That's where I'm at. Also belt is tight and no noise from pump

First of all I assume that you seem to have manual steering all of the time. When stopped and holding the car from moving with your foot brake the steering effort is very, very high. When you say no noise from the pump. When you rotate your steering wheel you still do not hear any pump noise, even at full lock?

If there is never any noise or any apparent assist I am beginning to think that your pump is shot. It is possible that the internal pump parts have seized and the driveshaft could be broken inside the pump. The pulley and belt will still spin but the connection to the internal rotor and vanes could be lost.

That is correct, no noise,no assist, very high effort.
Thank you for your help.
Any chance could be a flow valve problem?
Greg

you could take the belt off and wiggle the pulley and tell if the shaft is broken. I broke the shaft in my duramax a couple years ago (like every other duramax owner). it's not so noticeable until you get the belt off...

Jim,
Hello, I replaced pump, while driving steering is better, not as easy as before problem but much better. While stopped effort is still very very high. Any suggestions?
Thank you for your help,
Greg
