I almost passed smog today !!! That may not seem like much, but this is the fifth try because the local wrenches graduated from the Home for Chronically Confused Mechanics...
The sniffer is REAL clean, but I have the wrong air cleaner assembly.
Cat from honda, fan from ford, alt from earlier chev were also wrong, so... I will be looking in Haynes, Shop manual, but if somebody could provide quick description, it would help. I might put the filter from my truck on the Vette just to pass.
I haven't been this excited since the first week I had her home !!!
Re: Almost past smog !! Wrong air cleaner...advice? (Stevo)
Hey Stevo,
You might want to check out a company called, "Corvette Express" in Vacaville.
Rather than order a new air filter assembly from Ecklers $39.95... They might have one in stock and you can drive up there in less than an hour.
Good Luck.
Re: Almost past smog !! Wrong air cleaner...advice? (KENS78SILVERANNIV)
Thanks, Ken. I will call them in the AM after talking to the smog man.
The question I would like to solve is why CA won't let me put two cats on...as in duals...maybe two would not run hot enough or something...
Anyway, I am so stoked to really be on the road !!! finally.
At idle speed- 829 rpm had zero % CO (1.5% is max), 45 HC (120 is max)
At cruise - 2363 rpm, had zero CO and 14 HC...Should be pretty clean...everything is brand new...
Re: Almost past smog !! Wrong air cleaner...advice? (Stevo)
Ive heard CA is really tough on smog etc. I live on Vancouver Island where ther is no test but on the mainland they have this AIR CARE BS that you have to go through Good luck on your problem
Re: Almost past smog !! Wrong air cleaner...advice? (Stevo)
Hey Steveo,
California has the toughest smog laws in the country... and get ready... they are about to get tougher. That's because California has more cars on the road than most states combined. The reason they won't let you go with dual cats is that darn visual inspection. It's the first one they do... under the hood and under the car. Any deviation from stock is going to nail you. That's the law. My advice. Play their game... get the stock air cleaner for your inspection and then put it in a safe place so you can find it again in two years when it's time to get inspected again.

Re: Almost past smog !! Wrong air cleaner...advice? (Stevo)
So I talked to the "smog man" today. On the work order, he wrote "wrong air cleaner" but what he meant was "wrong diverter valve"!! Of course !!
(He evidently did not use the machine to do the sniffer test and tried to perform it himself.)
Anyway, sorry about the wild goose chase. After checking, the air cleaner is the correct stock item. I will explore the diverter tonight. Stevo
