A piston "slap" is created when the skirt of the piston "smacks" the cylinder wall as the piston goes up/down. In other words, the piston wobbles within the bore of the cylinder. A mild piston slap often will "cure itself" as the engine warms up and things expand with heat. If you've got piston slap at running temperature, sounds like you're in for an engine rebuild.
