Default A little VIN # help Please . . .

I have a 1981 two tone silver and dark blue Coupe that I purchased new in 1981. The VIN number 100693. I have always thought that the car was the 693rd. vehicle produced at the BG plant.

Today when I was in a Borders book store, one of the Vette books noted that the first VIN number out of BG was 100692. I thought that the first several hundred cars off the line were two tone beige. ??? What gives???

Does anyone out there have a "Corvettes by the numbers" book or other source that could confirm the BG VIN range for 1981.

Thank you in advance!

According to the NCRS Spec Guide the ending sequence # for June at the BG plant was 100692. They were still building them at the SL Plant during that period as well. It looks like yours was the first 81 built in July.

According to the Black Book.

S400001 thru S431611 were built at SL (Total 31611)
5100001 thru 5108995 were built at BG (Total 8995)

Total production for the year at 40606.

There is no indication of the first colors off the line, at least in the BB. It does state that all two-tones were built at BG but precise paint quantity records are not currently available. (end quotes)

Binnie and Vette79-SA - Thank you for the clarifcations. That would make sense based on the way the book stated the numbers. I appreciate you guys taking the time to look it up.

PS. Nice collection Vette79!

This is my friends 81. Look familiar?

I'll have to get the VIN# from him and compare.

78Vette:

That would be interesting. I see that he went to BF's on his. My car has 42,000 miles now and I still have the original tires on mine. They are getting a little low on tread - and dried out - and the Right Rear aways goes flat after about a week, but I hate to get rid of mine.

I just found and bought on EBAY a few months back a set of brand spanking new Eagle GT's - they have been mounted on a show car and it was rolled around for the past year, but never on the road. They still have all of the nubs on them and the markings between the treads. I know they are not the best tire to have if your are looking to enjoy your car, but I am kind of an original freak. In fact now that I have them and they are so nice - and not dried out, I hate to even put them on the car. IF I could find another set of wheels that were perfect and OEM, I would buy them just to mount these tires on them and then switch between tires when I was considering driving the car. Right now I am lucky if I put 500 miles on the car in a year. (Especially with the new '02.)

With the exception of a few discoloration marks on the nose - my car is 100% stock and in brand new condition. Everything works perfectly.

It would be interesting as well to know if your friends has ever had a fracture in the fiberglass on the right rear fender just below the rear deck and just in front of the rear plastic ?? tail piece. Mine had cracked there in the mid 80's and in the early 90's it finally broke out. It is a piece about the size of a dime or slightly smaller. I consider this a factory flaw as I have seen this on several other 81's.

I'm interested to hear all the details about your friends '81.

Thanks
Glenn

Glenn,

Send me a reminder after 9/7. I'm leaving in the morning and won't be back for a couple of weeks and my friends left for Carlisle today. I'll get more info when we both return.

Joe..

ps: maybe drop me an email as a reminder.
