My A/C compressor on my '77, is making a noise. With just the engine running its fine, no noise at all. But once I turn on the A/C, the compressor is making a squealing sound, like a bearing is bad.... Is the compressor low on oil, is the clutch shot or a bad bearing... Do I need to replace the whole compressor or can it be rebuilt... Like I said, its fine with just with the engine running, but once I turn on the A/C I get the noise..

I would do something before you get metal shavings in the system.

Are you sure its not a loose belt causing the squealing?
Are you sure its not a loose belt causing the squealing
Wouldn't a loose belt, make noise all the time. With or without the A/C being on. As long as the engine is running, that belt is turning...
No, it might not. belt might be tight enough just to run around the pulley but once you put a load on it, then it may squeak. A belt squeak should be familiar to you if you've ever heard one before.
Otherwise you have a problem with the clutch or a bearing in the A/C compressor. do you smell hot brake like smell? That would indicate a slipping clutch.

No, its not the belt, I know a belt sound. Its coming from the compressor. Its more a bearing, sounds like a water pump does when its going bad...
Try placing an auto stethoscope on and around the compressor to pinpoint the noise with the a/c on. I wouldn't continue to run it until you identify the problem.
