I bought my project 80 vette just under a year ago. It's been damaged on the front driver side for that whole time and I finally decided to get busy and fix it. The following page will take you through my fiberglass project. Please check it out and let me know what you think. By the way, it has 10 photos on the page, so it may take a little while to load. Photo's aren't too big though :) Thanks.
I've read to apply a back patch to the area - just a layer of glass is good.
What you did looks pretty solid, but Bubba's rivet may come back to haunt you some day.
Thanks guys. I actually had fun doing this. Just love working on cars I guess? :) I thought about putting a layer of glass behind it, but the way the piece was broken I'm no sure there would have been enough glass to make a good bond and hold it. Hopefully when it's painted it won't really be noticeable. I can't wait to get it into the spray shop!! Thanks again.
What you could have done was to make a formwork to fit behind the damaged area,to form the original shape,& to support the fibreglass as you lay it.That way you would have reduced the thickness of the repair,& not needed to use bondo.
The beauty of fibreglass is that if you make a mistake you just grind it off & start again.
