Default 81 Cam Question

What cam could anyone recomend to put in my 81. All stock now and has the functioning computer on it. I would like to swap it out but still keep the computer working. Thanks.

Default Re: 81 Cam Question (RC81)

I've dropped a Crane Compucam 2040 into mine. The computer is happy with it as there is good vacuum at idle, mileage is still good & there's a lot more mid to upper end power. It keeps the idle vacuum high by keeping valve overlap at a minimum but opens/closes the valves quickly to improve scavenging.
It really needs decent heads to get the full effect but even with the stock heads it goes much better now. I've just put in a Hypertech thermomaster chip (ideal for aftermarket cams, the gumf said) & the difference is brilliant - it seems that the low end that I felt I lost from fitting the cam is restored to better than it was stock, so it complements the cam very well. Without the new chip, setting the base timing to 12BTDC made a nice difference. With decent heads (better flow, more CR) I think this cam will keep me happy for quite a while :)
Crane do a range of cams for computer control & there's a couple with more lift & duration.

I was thinking after I made my first post that I have heard of people keeping the computer and computer carb on their ZZ4 engines. Maybe the computer is more forgiving than I thought.
