Hi guys, I finally got my half shafts put back together and am preparing to install my fiberglass rear spring. I think I may have a spring meant for a later model vette, it's about 1/4" too wide. The bolts dont line up.
It looks like I could trim some of the mounting plates to make it fit without touching the actual spring itself but I'm curious if there is anything else that is different? Are all of them the same length end to end?
Has anyone ever done this before? I'd love to just order another spring and get the right part on it...but ...you know, I just cant wait the season is almost over!
before you start modifying the spring whose is it? I think the wider spring may have a higher spring rate on it due to the wider width. you may want to call and ask.
I it doesn't matter just use a rat tail file and open up some clearance for the bolt holes both sides of the spring to keep the spring centered.
Its a TRW spring sold by muskegon brake. It's a 340# spring, I was able to decipher that much of the part #. It seems like it should work except for the bolts not lining up. I'm not one to hack into something unless I know theres a clear path ahead and someone has already done it without issues. I'd much rather sell this one to someone that has the correct year and just buy the correct part for my car.
If the only difference is the 1/4" or so width on the shims.... I'm definitely not above modifying parts to fit my application.
I sent them some emails and tried calling with no response yet. I guess I'll give it a day or two... but it's supposed to be pretty nice t top weather here in Chicago the next few days
Do you mean the bolts from the TA to the spring don't line up? If that is the case, you should raise the TA to where it would be at normal ride height. That normally brings things in allignment.
