Default Speedometer gear and o-ring replacement

This is a question about replacing my speedometer gear and o-ring on my ’71 with an M20 4-speed.

I had initially planned to drive the front wheels up on ramps so I can pull the cable and speedo gear out of the transmission. I’ll change the o-ring while I have the cable out. The ramps will make the front of the car 10-12 inches higher than the back of the car. This bring me to my question: Will the incline of the car while it is on ramps cause the gear lube to gush out of hole when I pull the speedometer cable out of the transmission? Common sense says yes, but I’ve learned not to apply common sense when working on a C3!

Thanks,
Rick

Or you could consider buying a floor jack and 4 safety stands and do the job the right way.......................

I have a floor Jack and 4 Jack stands. My Ramps provide more room to work though. That is why I asked to question about the gear lube running out of the speedo cable fitting while the car is inclined. Can someone provide this info?

Thanks,
Rick

Why not put the front up on ramps and then jack up the back and use the jack stand there? I don't have a manual box so I can't comment on the oil loss. On the auto box it would be a struggle to access the cable with just the front up on ramps.

I don't know about the manual trans, but on the auto you can pull it out with the front wheels up on ramps and fluid doesn't pour out.
You could jack it from the side that the cable is on and that should insure no spillage.

The answer is no. You won't get more than an ounce of oil from your trans unless it's way overfilled.

Thanks to all that took the time to reply with their advise. Putting 2 jack stands on the right side of the car is an interesting idea that I had not thought of.
