I have a '77 with an L-82 thats all stock. And I'm thinking of changing the mufflers. Right now its a true duel exhaust car, cast iron manifolds with no Cats, pipes to factory style mufflers. And now I'm thinking of replacing them with Magnaflow or Flowmaster's. I want something that sounds nice and beefy , but won't give me a headache. I want to be able to listen to the radio or talk to the person along side me. Beside the wife rides with me a lot and I want to keep her happy... Does anyone have any ideas..

My Vette has Magnaflows. My truck has Flowmasters.
The truck is louder with a drone at cruise, the Vette is not that loud. Hope this helps.
I'm really happy with the hideaway mufflers that Corvette Central uses on their 2.5 inch exhausts. At idle, it has the high end snap and a low rumble. At full throttle, the high end sounds aggressive, but at cruise it doesn't drone or sound overpowering.
copied this from another site, if its bad enough it can cause headaches or worse , my friends wife didnt used to like when I brought my car over she said the drone made her nauseous.
Exhaust drone is primarily the result of sound waves traveling through the air and vibration that is transferred through a vehicle's frame, body and components. Exhaust drone vibration may also be a result of sound frequency alignment between the engine and exhaust. When the frequencies are aligned, the result is a pressure wave between the engine and exhaust. Sound waves, transferred sound and sound frequency must be controlled to quiet the exhaust. Exhaust system modifications and the application of sound control material will reduce exhaust drone in your vehicle.
I recommend you go for a cruise in a car that has the kind of mufflers you are thinking about buying so you can hear what it will sound like in the car while you are driving with your wife.
It is a resonance. Have you ever heard a car audio system vibrate/resonate at a certain pitch/frequency. Similar concept, but with the engine/exhaust system. It typically happens at a small range of engine RPMs, but can be very annoying if it is at your typical cruise RPM.
