Default A/C question

I am in the process of getting my A/C back in operation on my '69 (small block). The system worked well until a hose burst and then the engine was rebuilt so I'm just now getting it together. I have replaced all the hoses, drier and O-rings and have installed everything. I have pulled a vacuum using a vacuum pump and an old R-12 manifold/gauge set. I want to leave it overnight to see if the vacuum holds. My question is this- when you close off a side of the gauge set with the large ****, is the gauge itself still open to the system or is it also closed. In other words does the shut off close at the center inlet or at the outlet to the system? Thanks for any input!

My manifold set has 2 *****, low side and high side. When I shut mine off, the gauges are still open to the system, that's how you know if it's holding vacuum.

Thanks for the response. I was pretty sure that's how it operated but I want to be certain. When I left the shop after about a half hour of observing the vacuum, it was holding well. We'll see tomorrow.

When you are sure that there are no leaks, leave the vacuum pump running for about 1/2 hr. That will get rid of any leftover moisture in the system. .
