In the 1980s my best friend was racing a 7.0 litre hydroplane locally. He bought it used and fully depreciated, so we only kept track of the replacement parts and maintenance costs over two seasons. $800 per minute of actual driving time!

I've had my Vette 30 years and average about $500 per year in maintenance and upgrades. The wife's minivan depreciates at $1500 per year so she has nothing to say about it.

I have always heard the rule of thumb for project budget is
planned budget x 2 + 50% = total spent

i dont tell her what I've spent....If I did that she'd want that amount of money to spend on something that don't really need remodeled.

I don't even think about it. As stated, its a hobby. I've had it three years and spent maybe $15k. This was on a restro, no rust car. That does include wheels, tires, sound system, rebuilt front suspension, a ZZ454, TKO600 and lots of little stuff. I'm still working it and driving the wheels off. More fun that golf, that's for sure.

I think you have to have money to have a budget and that not happing with me having an 68 L 88 project and a '70 motion vette
have fun
