The "steering rack" (the part with the piston, rod and all the power steering hard and soft lines attached to it) is leaking pretty badly. Before I drop it.... is this unit rebuildable? I assume it must have some kind of O-rings or seals and gaskets in it that must have gone bad.

Yep, the seal kits are readily available from any auto parts store and cost about $15. The seals can be removed using ordinary o-ring picks available thru Harbor Freight or other vendors and compressed air can also be used to blow the seals out once the snap ring has been removed.

Thanks for the response. That's what I thought. Before I drop this system, is there anything unusual I need to do? It looks like all I have to do is separate the pitman and idler arm from the unit, remove the cotter pin on the driver side, disconnect the lines and the entire unit will come out. I already separated the tie rod ends. When I separate the pitman and idler arms do I need a pickle fork or do they just pull off after I take the cotter pin and the nuts off?
When I install seal kits in the control valve or the ram I install them with the components still mounted because its not necessary to remove them.
Thanks for the info. I had always wondered if the control valve seals could be replaced without taking the valve off the car. I may give this a try over the winter because I'm growing tired of leaving a trail of power steering fluid wherever I go.

Thanks. I am going to check that out. I first need to figure out exactly where its leaking from. I appears the entire ram has drips forming on the bottom edge of it that eventually leak as a straight line onto my garage floor.
