Im not sure what kind of cam I am running right now, but it is not stock. I don't think it is right for the set up I have.
I have a '76 with a 700R4 and a 3.08 rear gear. Right now, at 100 mph, I am only turning about 2300 rpm. The car doesn't have a whole lot of torque, and doesn't seem to "wake up" until I hit about 70-80 mph. I'd like to get the engine to perform a bit more at lower speeds. The Crane 260 seems like it would work fine for this:
Specifications:
* Advertised duration: 260 intake/260 exhaust
* Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 204 intake/204 exhaust
* Gross valve lift: .427 in. intake/.427 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 110 degrees
* RPM range: 1,200 to 4,200
* 8.0 to 9.5: 1 compression ratio recommended
Is anyone else running one of these?
With a setup similar to mine?
How do you like it?
Re: Thinking about a Crane 260 cam... any input? (Shrike)
That is a REALLY mild cam. More mild than a stock L48 I think.
Have you thought about changing the rear gears rather than the camshaft? Having a T700, you could go as low as 3:90 and still have a good cruise RPM.
At what RPM does your engine seem to "come on the cam"?
Re: Thinking about a Crane 260 cam... any input? (1979toy)
The cam doesn't seem to "come online" till about 2000-2500 rpm's. I have thought about changing rear ends, but that is much more expensive, and I just can't afford it right now. I am still looking at some other cams, Comp seems to have more choices.
Re: Thinking about a Crane 260 cam... any input? (Shrike)
My CompCam 260H is considered "mild", but it is taller and longer than the one you are asking abt. You only want to go in there once, so make sure you take enuff cam with ya when you do........ :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

I'm running the Crane 260 Maximun Volocity cam in mine with Edle.2101, Holly 600,3.55 rear,
MAD chambers,and 4speed. I Like the performance and it's much more responsive than stock.
I'm glad I used the 260 as I drive it to work every day and my mpg is only about 15. Gonna
retire in 13 months then I will think of doing something different. Steve
Re: Thinking about a Crane 260 cam... any input? (Shrike)
Go a little bigger on cam. I'm currently running a CompCam 265 DEH, 211 deg. intake, 221 deg. exhaust with 110 lobe sep. Idles nice, 16-17 inches vacuum, pulls to about 5500 rpm, lots of low end torque. This cam would probably help your application. Great daily driver cam, love it....BUT......
I'm upgrading my heads next week to Trick Flow's (64 cc), so my compression will be just over 10.0 to 1. Therefore, I 'm also stepping up to the CompCam 270 Magnum (224 degrees intake/exhaust, 110 lobe sep) Should sound really nice and pull like a banshee! The extra compression (1+ point) should help reduce the bottom end torque loss I'm expecting. And....with the good intake/exhaust ratio, (and good exhaust system) I no longer need the extra duration on the exhaust side. The single pattern profile should help "charge" my intake and work a little better than a dual pattern with cheapo heads. My .02. :cheers:
