I know my mind is jumping ahead about 2 years, but in a fit of boredom I checked craigslist for engines and found someone selling a zz 350 for $3500... about 1/2 the new price. Would that work in a 79?
Here is the link in case anyone in MI is interested.
I have an auto. How do I identify the transmission? I am a couple years from being ready for a new engine but I was surprised at the number of engines for sale locally. I'll need some time to figure out what engine would suit my needs best and I will have to get this thing on the road to figure that out.
That doesn't look like the intake that came with the ZZ4 - depending on what's on there and what you have, you may need to change the intake or your carburetor to match.

This motor looks like a ZZ crate 350, which I think had a square bore intake, not a ZZ3 or ZZ4, which were spread bore. If so, first of the ZZ motors, so maybe pre-1996 or 1997? I got a deal on a ZZ3 at about that time, so if this is a "ZZ350", it may be the plain "ZZ" which is the earlier one. Still cool but maybe not at this price. Also, looks run hard.
I believe that will be the one piece seal engine. Change over was 30 years ago, but to c3 guys that is late model stuff. Would need different flywheel.

Got it. I automatically ASSumed it wsa a ZZ4. But yeah, if it's a square bore like you say an dhe's running a QJ, he'll need to get a different intake, carb, or adapter. The adapter, of course, will likely require a drop base air cleaner or a different hood.
Myself, if I had a QJ I'd switch to the ZZ4 intake or Edel 3701.
Thanks for all the replies. I know I'm a long way out from doing a swap but should I start keeping my eyes out now for something and if so what should I be looking for? Ok, yeah that was a pretty open ended question. I'll keep reading, learning and looking.
Ok, the piston tops down, the engines are pretty much the same. Yes, you can get forged crank-pistons and 4 bolt mains but if you aren't going to the track and turning 7000 rpm's that is not necessary. So if you don't need a rebuild, heads-cam-intake might be another option to consider.
That's wayy to much money. Mine was 4200$ delivered 3 or 4 years ago. The used one has no warranty. No more ZZ4s. The base ZZ4 at 355 hp and 405 torque was a hell of a bargain . Not so with the ZZ5.
