A friend on mine has a 74 with a 350 block in it, that is not the origional engine. He wants to perform an oil change himself, but without the correct specs on the engine he doesn't know what oil, or how much to use? Also is it imperative to change the filter at each oil change?

Get a VIN number off the front-top of the passenger side head... These guys can tell you exactly what engine it is. Most 350's use 5-quarts of oil with a change. If you're unsure... a good parts store should be able to match the filter with ease.

If it is a 350 with a stock pan it "should" take five quarts with a filter change. I always replace my filter with a oil change. If not sure on amount of oil, add 5 quarts and and check the dip stick.

Mine actually takes a bit less than 5 qts. -- and even closer to 4 qts. if I use a "short" filter. But practically all these engines use the same filter and your choice of oil. It ain't exactly rocket science with these old Chevy small blocks.

Use a brand name oil, 10W-30. The AC Delco filter is PF-25. It will take about 4.7 litres or 4.5 quarts. Check level on fill and after starting when the oil filter is full.
