Default parking brakes ?

is there any secret way to get the spring and retainer on the parking brakes on my 76 vette with the axles still in place. I've been playing with them for the last 3 hours and not able to get the retainer springs on

I was able to compress the spring with the retainer on top with some needle nose pliers and work it into place. I guess I was lucky.

I've read other posts where people have compressed the spring and tied them with dental floss or small zip ties. If you do that, you may be able to reach some needle nose pliers through the hole in the retainer disc and grab the pin to pull it through and lock.

Good luck!

I also used needle nose pliers but I din't try to do it through the hole in the axle, pulled the pad to the side and placed it on there, held the pin with my finger from the back and you need to hold your tongue just right while you do it.

Here's my version but there's not much detail on the retaining pins

I also pulled the shoes outside the axle flange as far as possible to put retainers on. I put Gorilla Tape on the back of the pin that is accessible to help hold in place. If you have small fingers it's possible to spin the retainer to lock while gripping the pin with needle nose, nitrile gloves help to spin it.

Just done this job myself and tie down the springs with thread, pull the shoes out to the side and wiggle the spring over the pin, still not easy but doable, I used a little terminal screwdriver to cut the thread afterwards, probably easier with the car on a lift instead of lying down next to it but hey no pain no gain!!
It was only when I did the second one I realised that the brake cable spring was in the wrong position on the first one so now I've got to take the other calliper off again to get the spring right :-(

Regards
Graham

I use a 6" piece of fuel hose to compress and rotate the spring.

got it done using thin tie downs then used a propane torch to melt them

pushed everything to one side and used needle nose pliers to twist the retainer. the only thing i did not replace was the retractors
