I am concerned that clocking the unit too far to clear the hood may not be good, do i need a rear exit sanden 508, or will the ports clear the hood no problem wit the 90 degree connectors?

I got mine from nostalgic air , couldn't get the hood clearance. I sent it back and they changed it to rear exit. Its in a 74 sb by the way.

its not a problem on my setup but if you have the air pump (which I dont) I can see where it might have some fitment issues.
I have my guys looking at the issue and am being told if it clocks 90* then the discharge hose would be the high hose and the suction hose would likely be rubbing the coolant resevoir (again mine is a 75)
so the answer is a "definite maybe". I know thats not a lot of help but it is probably going to be a try it and see.
The suggestion is to use a short drop fitting. you might find it under the number SB1323SD.
If y6ou google that number you will see images of how short it is. Any decent AC shop should be able to make a hose with that fitting and a charge port somewhere on the hose.
we do it all the time.

i have to deal with the air pump and tubes the rear exit may get in the way of all of that
On my application (LS/Holley bracket), the inner fender/fiberglass would not allow it to exit on the side and still have hoses made to fit and I did not like the hoses going up in a V pattern. The rear exit is much cleaner, in my opinion, if possible.
The compressor can be mounted with the fittings pointing in any direction. If the
fittings are pointed at any angle lower than 45 degrees be sure to attach the
crimped a/c hoses first. It is not recommended to mount the compressor on any
angle over 45 degrees, only do so if the bracket is designed to fit the compressor
at an odd angle. If the hoses are not attached first the oil can drain out, which can
cause a system failure.
This is the style compressor that came in my Classic Auto Air kit for my '81. I had to trim the one ear off to clear my tall valve cover and to give me more belt adjustment.
