So I live in Carrollton ga(about45 mins west of atl) and I just got my Blueprint 396 small block in and running in my 77. I've melted pistons twice in my life on 350s. Always had other people set my timing because my knowledge is limited. So im very gun shy. Does anyone know of a dyno tuning company close to Atlanta that can deal with a holley carb and my old school hot rod.??
Give Brian Estelle a call at Angry Yankee Racing. He is located in Doraville, GA 414-322-0280

If you don't feel comfortable, I understand, but you should at least buy a timing gun and run it after you get the engine back so that you know we're it's set.

Thats actually a good idea. I've been told that if the car starts up fine, then if you drive it for a little bit, turn off and it struggles to start back up timing is too high.. Ever heard of that?

I am really good friends with the owner of Mo's Speed Shop in Dallas. We built my big block Chevelle and LS3 Corvette at his shop and he does have an in-ground dyno. Jeff Harris is the man to speak with and he is very knowledgeable with older cars, in fact the shop if full of them. Tell him Eric sent you.
(770) 222-5015 - They are closed on Mondays but open Tues-Sat
That being said, Brian Estelle is also a good number to have.
Just a few of the cars from the shop

Could also be your floats not set correctly on the carb. Does it run on when you turn the key off? Could also be fuel vapor lock if the fuel line is getting too hot.
If you just want to check your timing, I live in Hiram (I commute to Carrollton for work every day) and would be more than willing to hook up a timing light and set the initial timing for you. I have a small lift in my basement and tinker on my old cars on the weekend.
