Default Much Bigger Problem Found

Ok, so did most of the check recommended here, thanks to everyone.

yesterday finaly got some quality time with my Vette, changed the distributor out to remove that from the possible problems.

BUT when i started it up i started to hear a rattle metallic sound. nothing to do with the distributor, but a new sound that was now presenting itself as the reason for problem i had in the first place.

after some research and after listening to some you tube vids, it appears i have bent rod or thrown a guide.

it seems to be coming from the top of the engine on the passenger side of the cover, but im not sure.

finding a good mechanic in this part of the world for classic cars aint easy, so any help with the diagnosis is very much appreciated.

thanks

Default Video of the clattering sound

Well I got to work on the Vett some more.

here is a link to a video of the engine running without the passenger side valve cover off

a couple of questions please:

I hope someone here is familiar with his sound and can point me in the right direction as to what it is

the manual requires tightening/ adjusting the tappets to zero slap while engine is running. is there some secret to doing this without oil dripping on the headers

I removed the EGR valve to get the valve cover off, the inlet are covered in black sutt. is that normal?

thanks everyone

Get a remote starter switch from Harbor frieght for cheap, then you can adjust the valves with engine not running.

Default a lifter or not a lifter

thanks again Doug1.

did as much adjustment to the tappets as possible, but the noise is deeper down in the engine

I had a mechanic check the car last night. He is sure its a lifter>

so next step is to remove the intake to get to the lifters and replace them, might as well since we have access.

are there any pictures from someone who has done this before?

I don't have any pics, but I've had top half of engine off before. The main thing I would suggest is that you be meticulous about getting enough sealer on the manifold intake gasket and let it sit overnight.

Sure, you have solid lifters I assume? Be sure that when you adjust the valves, that you do that based on having solid lifters. Get a cheap torque wrench(digitial, that goes on the ratchet, between ratchet itslef and socket) from Harbor Frieght. Use that when you tighten down the bolts on manifold gasket. There is also an order in which those get snugged down, go around that sequence slowly several times before the final tightening with torque wrench.

That sequence and the number to torque the bolts down is in a cheap Chilton's manual.

I just got done looking at my car, something I remember now is that some of the intake manifold bolts are a different length, be sure to mark those somehow, I liked using ziplock bags with something written on a sticky note. Also, when you get all the bolts out along with of course the distributor, you're gonna have to pry all around to break the silicone. I assume you have the stock intake manifold, it's cast iron(I think), either way, it's got some weight to it, keep that in mind, it's not gonna just lift off with one hand standing back, I have aluminum, much lighter.

Just remembered also, get some Lucas assembly lube for for the camshaft side of each lifter. I also used the "black" slicone on each side of the gasket, had good success with that.
