I want to remove the interior plastic panel in my '79, below the rear glass. There appear to be 6 screws. Once I remove those screws, will it pop out or is there more to it? Thanks for any help.

After you remove the 6 screws it should just pop right out.
If you are going to re-paint this... it will probably be gummy when removed. The rear shelf had a tendency to do this!
When we remove them for painting we take some ultra fine steel wool with some thinner and then scrub the trim before we paint.

Thanks for the good advice. I plan to use the SEM Color Coat Spray. Does the fact that it is gummy tend to glue it in place and make it difficult to remove? It is already difficult to gracefully get back there if I don't kick out the glass. Which is more difficult, getting it out or getting it back in?

The gummy is the coating they put on the panel when new. It'll clean off a good scrubbing and then paint it. It won't hold the panel in place though. You did take out the corners first didn't you?

I have not done anything yet, but I will take the corners out first. Having made many, many mistakes, I have learned to ask before I do.
QUESTION To Willcox Corvette:
Regarding the "gummy-sticky" rear luggage trim parts --
What "Thinner" do you use with the fine steel-wool to clean these parts?
What "brand-type & color" of black paint do you use or recommend?
Any guidance to assist the "sticky-mess" on the 1978-1982 cars would be appreciated 😀
I simply stripped the paint off with Zinzeer Stripfast.
Painted it with Rustoleum flat from a quart can but with a spray gun.
I'd think you could use the Rustoleum flat black with a brush as flat flows out very evenly.
Did both my 79s and my 78 like this.

Willcox, I know this is an old thread but here goes. I removed the rear shelf on my 25k mile 1979 and want to repaint it. What procedure do you use to prep the surface? Do you know if this piece vinyl or glass, or some other material? Thanks. I don't want to ruin my first resto job!
I know this is an old thread but it just helped me with a 79. Thought I'd add to it for the next person.
One thing to add is that on this car there was a piece of double sided tape on the "U" shaped piece. Not sure if it's factory or not but it was still stuck to the piece and require a little wiggle.
