With a warm/hot engine, when the key goes to START, there is sometimes a delay of as much as 2 seconds before the starter energizes. It's a '73 350 with Automatic and stock manifolds, but with 2 1/2" exhaust tubing.
Thanks in advance.
My guess would be the starter solenoid. I have a hot start problem that I'm gonna fix with a mini high torque starter.
Thanks much Ted.
It could very well be the original starter/solenoid assembly, and if so, has 76K miles and 42 years old. It sure is a bitch to hold up and install it while on your back. I like your light weight alternative.

I think u are on the edge of a heat soak issue for your solenoid. Ya know there is a lot of voltage loss in all the contacts between the ign switch and the solenoid also. After 40 years they could need a clean'n or maybe even replacement. U can install a solenoid just to bypass all the switch contacts and that may help some. But the temperature effect comes from the windings inside the solenoid and a good shield will help that the best.
After a couple of seconds, does it turn over slower than when it's cold? Just trying to eliminate the battery as the problem. One way to check is have somebody put a digital volt meter on the battery as it first cranks to see the lowest voltage.

Thanks for the response.
Good question. The cranking speed is always brisk, and doesn't seem to slow once it begins. The battery is about 21 months old.
Had the same problem in my 73. Replaced the solenoid with a heavy duty one and have not had a problem since.
Of course, check and clean all the connections between key/battery and starter.
Good luck!
