Default Edelbrock performer intake height

I want to install a performer intake on my L-82 (1978 Pace Car) but it is too high. I know I can get a drop base air cleaner but not one for my dual snorkel air cleaner. I want to keep the dual snorkel because I think the engine compartment gets too hot to use a regular air cleaner and lose the ram air temp. and ram effect. Suggestions?

Installing a Performer intake without a stouter camshaft and higher compression heads will accomplish almost nothing so I suggest keeping it stock........................

Did you measure the hood clearance with clay?

The Performer will get you a nice weight savings. Definitely worth the effort.

64cc/200 aluminum heads,1.6 rockers, headers.

Thanks for your response. I guess I will go with TORKER II

Measure with clay, and buy the heights that will fit your hood.
Edelbrock 2701 fit under my 69 sb hood, with 3" drop down airfilter. And still I have 10mm from top filter to under the hood (measured with clay:- )

which part number Performer are you looking at? The Edelrock site states the EPS version will not fit but the regular version is shorter and does not list that restriction

With it's short runners the Torquer manifolds are designed for high rpm operation. For the street (and especially with an automatic transmission) you want a 180 degree manifold.

I replaced my torker II with a performer and it really woke it up. performer fits under stock hood but I don't have a stock air cleaner. if you do go with a torker II, I will sell mine cheap!!! (although I don't recommend them)

I have a 2101 under the hood of my '71. Your '78 has a taller hood than my car. It should clear.

Performer EPS fitted under the stock hood of my '70 but needed drop base air cleaner with a little extra shaved from the mounting face to fit, hood clearance is minimal! If I was doing it again I would have shaved about 7mm from the flange of the manifold. Much better street manifold than the Torker that was fitted.

PN 2101

There is no clearance restriction on the Edelbrock site for that manifold

Quick question - why are you going with the performer? Is there a problem with your L-82 intake? Are you trying to go to a square bore carb / throttle body? Otherwise, I don't see a whole lot of point in removing the manifold you have - already aluminum. You'll spend at least a hundred (these are pretty easy to find used) and gain virtually no power for the time and cash investment.

Plus, if you did do heads and cam, I'd recommend going to a Performer RPM instead, as it will be better able to handle the higher RPM capability of the new parts.

I also have a Performer RPM on my 80 with a stock hood, but it required a dropped air cleaner.

I talked to Edelbrock today. They said 2101 should fit and give me some benefit so I will try it and post results

The performer 2101 will have no benefit over the stock aluminum L-82 intake..the Performer RPM will have a very minor benefit..5-7 hp if you are lucky. I reused the L-82 aluminum intake on my rebuilt 355 L-82 with Howards Roller cam, AFR aluminum heads with 10.2:1 compression primarily based on what I had read about the performer series manifolds and the advice of my engine builder for the short block who has built hundreds of motors who told me not worth the bother on engines spinning under 6,000 rpms on the street versus the L-82 aluminum intake....the new engine pulls real hard to 6K. Also, a forum member with a stock L-82 like my stock L-82 before the rebuild when we ran on the same dyno, his 78 L-82 with stock heads and aftermarket cam and performer rpm produced 15 more rwhp versus my 78 L-82 with OEM cam, OEM intake, and OEM heads. His cam and performer rpm was worth 15 more hp than my stock L-82 probably all of the gain in the cam, not the intake...233 versus 248 RWHP...Not worth the trouble.

Stock heads with the performer RPM? I agree with the "not worth the trouble" without combining the RPM with aftermarket heads. But, I am not familiar with the heads you listed.

He said "OEM" and "AFR". The AFRs merit a Performer RPM, I'd say...
