For the 3-1/2 years that I've had my '69 L46 coupe I've been fighting a good amount of detonation to the point where pulling out enough timing to prevent it would cause the car to run like crap. So I did some research and saw that L46's came with 66 jets from the factory and looking at what other cars came with, 66's seemed small. Figured I'd pull apart my Quadrajet to see what's in and sure enough 66's were in the carb. I replaced them with 70's yesterday and my car has never run better! I no longer get ANY part/mid throttle detonation that I used to, it's amazing, sad to say!
My question is, why did these cars come with 66 jets (smallest that I know of available for a Quadrajet) for a performance car? Was it that they were fine with the fuel that was available back when she was new?
thank you for the quick response. Had rebuilt the carb but it was just a gasket set. Now that it is back together the jets are a little loose. Thanks again, Rob
For comparison, my 70 L-46 carb was rebuilt by Lars and he used, 70 or 76 Main Jets (his hand writing was hard to read on that last digit), 43 Main Metering Rods and BA Secondary Metering Rods.

Thank you for the info, my carb had BG secondary rods in it and I stepped down to DF rods (next step richer) and helped out with detonation, still getting some at WOT though.

Seems they worked ok with '69 leaded fuel. Remember the lead was used also to increase octane. I have that particular carb on my '69 350/300. runs good with it.
