Converting QJ from hot air to electric choke
Do I need to do anything besides change the choke cap? I installed part #8184A (Universal GM electric choke cap W/spade connector) from Carbs Unlimited. Now I don't have enough travel i.e., if I set the choke to close cold it doesn't open fully. If I set it to open fully, it doesn't choke!
Something I missed?
Thanks!

Don't you need a complete conversion kit? When I did this, I got a kit that contained the spring/cap assembly, wiring, and a thermostatic unit that gets bolted to the intake manifold. Oh yeah -- I got instructions with it too, but I threw them out right away! :D

thermostatic unit??
on an electric choke theres no intake thermostatic thingie...
theres a thermostatic hole CAP though....
just undo the 2 rivets/screws... slap it in there... align upto initial marking. put in 3 screws..
hook up ignition on hot wire.
now follow those instructions for adjustment!!

Re: Converting QJ from hot air to electric choke (daily_driver)
The choke is getting bat voltage, and the coil gets warm and opens the choke, but like I said there is not enough range. The cap was new. Is it defective? Did I forget something?
When I first put it together I lined up the cap with the 1 notch rich setting. That allows it to close ok, but for it to open fully when warm I have to turn the cap about 1" to the lean direction.

My unit is a Borg-Warner aftermarket part. Works great because the sensor checks actual engine temp and adjusts the spring (using electric heat) accordingly. Oh, and I've got 2 wires -- one is always hot, the other goes to a switched 12V source.
I've never seen this GM unit -- how does it tell what engine temp is?
Something is definitely wrong with your unit. Is the spring hitting the choke lever the right way? (Mine actually has a plastic doohickey on the spring that fits over the choke lever.)
