Default Need new power steering pump

I believe it maybe time to replace the leaking power steering pump on my 79. I have always heard that if you run them empty it burns them up. I'm not 100% sure where it is leaking from but figured since it's the original why not change the pump and hoses. So my question is where to buy a replacement from? Any ideas? Any advise on replacing this? Thanks.

Its almost always the 3/8" return hose that leaks and that is super easy to replace. The hose just has ordinary hose clamps on each end.

Toobroke made a good point. You're going to replace the hoses anyway, right? Just replace the hoses, and if that solves the problem, it saves you money and labor on the pump.

Besides the hoses, the ps cylinder is a likely suspect too. Cheap to fix as well.

If you get a new pump: I got a A1 cardone reman. from Rockauto.

Default I got mine at the local parts place..

quick, lifetime warranty, and if it fails I can just go get another one at autozone.

I had to transfer a stud from my old one to the new one (generic gm pump I gather), but other than it worked just fine. I did not return the core until I made sure everything fit and bolted up.

I had gotten the old pump with a power steering kit I got 23 years before....so i have no qualms.

I actually think that I warped the old pump body when attempting to tighten the hose. This was the first power steering leak that I had in the 23 years of having power steering.

Anyway, with a local buy & lifetime warranty it's easier to do a remove & replace if it fails. Just my 2 cents,

Get rid of the whole power steering stuff, I did, to lighten it, for more speed.

You can rebuild the pump for $8. I think gates sells a kit and it is nothing more than replacing o rings.
