What can be done to get rid of the exhaust poping after you have let off the throttle. I have a manual tranny and it is fine when i put in the clutch but if i leave it out and the rpms wind down then it starts popping like light backfire.
The first thing I would check would be my entire exhaust system from manifold to muffler. Any little leak can cause that popping. I had it when my front exhaust pipe was completely broken in 2 pieces and I also got it when my muffler was not properly sealed to the rear pipe. MJ

Same here. Could also be caused by a too rich condition, but I think it would still need that little bit of oxygen in the exhaust that can only come through a crack...
i had a chamber misfire that started out like that, it would only pop when i let of the throtle but it eventualy progressed to doing it all the time. how loud is this pop by the way?
Its fairly loud. I don't have an x or an h pipe. Probably is a leak somewhere. Just had my flowmasters put on, but is was doing it well before that. The exhaust guy tightened up the connections at the pipe to manifolds. Thinkin about gettin headers.... Any recommendation
I get a popping sound from my stock side exhaust. I've learned that it's OK for it to pop...sounds kinda cool actually....what happens is that fresh air rushes back into the pipe after the exhaust flow from each cylinder is expelled. This fresh air mixes with unburnt fuel caused by a rich condition and detonates inside of the exhaust. It's OK if it's just popping. It is BAD if it's actual backfire which means that fresh air is getting into the exhaust further up the pipe, for example my exhaust pipe donut gaskets had been blown away and the exhaust pipe was loose from the header....LOUD backfires whenever I would get off the throttle after a hard acceleration. I installed some new donuts and tightened everything up, now there's just that mild popping. :)
Check your AIR pump, if you have one, for proper operation. If it's sending air to the exhaust at the wrong time it can make a popping sound in the exhaust, especially after you rev it up and it's backing down. Good luck
Unless you're talking about something EXTREMELY loud, this is normal. When you let off the gas at high RPM and coast down, the carb is going to be creating a temporarily rich A/F ratio until your foot/RPMs settle out again. You have a high vacuum level when you are decelerating in gear which is going to draw extra fuel. This rich condition is what causes the popping in your pipes - it's completely normal.
I'll concur that it's a rich idle condition and is relatively normal.
Now figure this one out guys:
Last week: NO POPPING
This week: Popping
The changes:
Reset Valve Pre-Load
Removed Choke butterfly (choke hasn't been hooked up in 2+ years)
New Plugs
Turned idle mixture screws almost all the way IN. With my cam, I have my main butterflies open so far that I'm running REAL rich and I'm way past the idle circuit and into the main at idle. My idle circuit does nothing.
