Default Tips When Changing Your Oil And Filter

These tips are for the novice who is new to their C3 and it's 350" V8 engine. The time to change your oil is also the best time to lube your front end and drive shaft u-joints (if they have grease zerks) and also the best time to rotate your tires. Put your C3 up on safety stands and start in.

I have found its very beneficial to take a sharp punch like a center punch or ice pick and poke a hole thru the bottom of your oil filter. While your filter is draining drain your oil pan while snugging up the oil pan bolts and snugging up the clamps on your power steering return hose.

While the oil is still draining lube the front end grease zerks and snug up the bottom radiator hose clamps. Snug up the transmission's oil pan bolts and lube the drive shaft's and half shaft's u-joints. Rotate your tires (if needed). As the car is sitting on safety stands you want to take advantage of that fact and do EVERYTHING you can do while its raised up.

The oil pan drain plug only needs to be snugged up (snug with a little "thump" of your palm against the wrench). Fill the new filter with oil, lube the rubber gasket, then screw it on until it has been turned 3/4 to 1 turn from when the gasket first touches.

Good luck and happy motoring...................

punching a hole in the filter is a great idea for those of us with engines older than '68...renders the canister housing useless...and on my Mercedes, with an inverted canister filter, really works well!

I always snug up my TRANNY pan bolts too, since I never torque them, and let the RTV skin over before changing the gasket, they are always loose. That way I am sure to strip one or two of them out as well!

And of course, great advice on only snugging the oil drain plug hand tight...everyone knows the factory torque specs on that fastener is just for legal purposes...

Don't you know he is a "highly disciplined engineer" - don't need no stinking torque wrench!
