Default shifter burn

the insulation around my trany is the original and is also almost totaly deteriorated, the shifter handle always got really hot but up untill this weekend i had a wood **** on it, i finaly got a black chrome **** and now the whole thing gets almost to hot to touch. would new insulation fix this or is there a problem with my whole transmission that it gets this hot?

The insulation would definitely help, but are you certain that the **** is not hot because of the ambient temperature? My shifter is HOOOOOT to the touch on a hot day. I've gotten used to it... probably don't have feeling in my right palm anymore. ;)

Easiest fix- buy leather driving gloves.

The shifter isn't really connected to the transmission. It's bolted to an assembly that mounts it to the frame crossmember so the only direct connection is the shifter arms on the trans.More likely the heat your experiencing is coming down the trans tunnel. You should have a thick seal between the bellhousing and the trans tunnel that stops the heat of the engine from traveling back. You should also replace the tunnel insulation and make sure that the rubber boot is not ripped and is sealing to the trans hump correctly. If you have all of these things in place you shouldn't have a problem with heat in the shifter. The tunnel seal is probably the most important.
