Default Clunking noise only in reverse ?

This morning I was parking the car and passed a spot so I stopped to back up. Accelerated in reverse and heard and felt metalic clunking maybe grinding noises. Going slow no noises.

Dont want to try and repeat so trying to figure out why this would happen only in reverse? Forward drives normal and whatever this is sounds pretty serious. Hope its just U-joints and not tranny/diff.

Any thoughts appreciated.

check the rubber bushings that mount the nose of the rear end nose support bracket to the frame.

I suggest spending some more time running slowly in reverse to see if you can further isolate the source of the noise. It could be a broken spring in the parking brakes and its also possible you need additional limited slip additive in your rear end if you were in the process of making a backward turn into the parking space. If you are unsure about when the oil in your rear end was last changed I recommend changing it and making sure it has at least 6-8 ounces of limited slip additive in it.

MelWff is the winner.

At lunch took the car home and got under to find the big nut and washer had fallen off the bolt/stud of whatever that big rear triangular nose bracket at the back end is to the diff.

So intalled new nut and seems to be fine now. THX

there should have been a rubber biscuit and flat washer on that bolt/stud before you put the nut back on see the diagram

Thanks I need to order that.

For now I just bubba'd with rubber washer-regular washer-nut for now. I replaced this years ago and now it falls off. Need to put double nut or lockwasher on this time.

Yeah, all 3 of my C3's are double nutted. Almost all of the lock washers found today are worthless as they don't have sharp edges to dig in like quality lock washers do. Blue LocTite is another great product for things like that as its strong but not too strong. Glad you found the problem and it wasn't something serious.
