Power window woes
I've been getting a lot done on my 78 the past few weeks so I have been leaning on you forum experts a lot thank you for all the help.
Since I got it The power window on the drivers side of my 78 rolles down till about 3 inches from the bottom it than needs to be pushed down from the window and once down needs to be lifted by the window to that point then will roll back up with the switch. When it gets to that point you can hear the motor turn and it makes a thumping sound like the teeth of the regulator are slipping on the motor gear. I purchased and installed a regulator repair kit from Willcox, same problem in the same place. Purchased and installed a new motor gear.....still exactly the same! I am now officially lost and confused. Any one have any other ideas? Thanx

The first one of these I did had the same thing happen. I realized that I had installed the repair piece on the wrong side of the regulator.Took it back apart and switched it to the other side, and it has worked fine ever since.

I thought of that. When I was installing it I wanted to install it on inboard side so it would be between the motor and the old gear but the instructions said to install it on the outboard side. I'm worried that it won't line up if I try moving it inboard.
Do you remember what side of the regulator you installed your on?

I Don't remember. I would have to take it apart and see. I even cleanly tig welded it in a few spots, and had to grind the welds off to switch sides. I do remember looking in there while moving the window up and down, and I could see that the gear was on the wrong side, and not making contact with the motor gear because it was to far away.
If you look in there you should be able to see why it doesn't work.

Son of a ¥£€%#* put the repair kit on the other side and still the exact same problem with the window around 4 inches from the bottom the motor just spins and disengages from the regulator gear. I am getting tired of pulling the damn window out just to have the same result!

Just in case anyone has the same problem, it looks like my regulator had a subtle arch to it. As the window closed the motor gear would move away from the regulator not much but enough to make it slip. I slid the repair gear just a hair down near the bottom of the Windows run maybe a sixteenth of an inch. Rolls up and down now without a miss.
Is the door shell itself flexing when the window has almost seated fully? Sometimes it can be a voltage issue-another reason I upgrade the poorly designed GM style window switches....lol amazing what increased voltage can give ya! But mechanical snags always need to be addressed first.

No I took the whole assembly out and put it together on my bench. I ran it while closely watching the motor and regulator gear go to its slipping point and I could see the regulator gear was just slightly moving away from the motor. When Iput a little pressure on the regulator towards the outboard side it would work fine. So I rotated the repair gear just a little at that point to keep it meshed with the motor gear.
