'81 L-82 existance?

Default '81 L-82 existance?

I looked an '81 over recently and from all the tell tale signs besides the VIN number, it sure looked like it had an L-82. This was determined by the valve covers, intake manifold and the additional electric radiator fan. I couldn't remember which digit of the VIN helps so that was no use. I was fine with that until I read the latest VETTE magazine which had a page on the '81 and it said no L-82 option. What gives?! Maybe this was not an '81. I thought I confirmed it by the clock missing. :confused:

All '81's had the L81 engine, no options. The L81s came with the mag. valve covers, black with cream colored ridges, and an aluminum intake manifold, along with the tubular header type exahaust manifolds, and the electric fan was an option, when ordered with a radio that had a built in clock, the '81 was equipped with an oil temp gauge installed by factory where the clock otherwise would be.

No, in 1980. But they did have the ribbed magnesium valve covers. And the aluminum intake. So the LG4 engine (305CID) can be difficult to identify without looking at numbers.
