Going to put a 850dp mechanical secondary 4 corner idle carb on my 467 motor, do I need to have a choke? Some guys have said you wont need it, but with my 780 vac secondary carb I need the choke to get it to fire up.
If your going to be starting the engine when it's cold, it's gonna be a bear to keep running till the engine starts to warm. If you live in a relatively mild climate (or just drive it when it's warm outside) you should be able to pump it twice, turn the key and it should at least fire. Then keep feathering with the pedal to keep it going for a minute or two. After that you should be fine.

Re: Do I need a choke on 850dp? (467-Ratman)
I don't have my BB in yet but haven't had a choke on my SB in two years. I tried the choke but could never get the elec Holley to work quite right and the manual choke would interfere with the air cleaner and close at the most inappropriate times! I warm the carb up according to 70LS& stated and have had no problems.
I don't use my vette much in the winter so the choke is a mute point. I don't plan on using a choke with my BB either.----so I'll need to warm it up a bit more---no problem listening to the engine roar for me.
My 750 starts right up so I think it is running a little rich at idle. I plan on transplanting my elec choke from 600 on it just to have for winter days when I want to hear it roar. :)

If the 750 is a double pumper and 600 is a vac secondary, you won't be able to swap the choke assemblies, they are two entirely different part numbers.
With my existing setup on my 780 with hot air choke with vacuum, the car fires up, then I need to feather it for about 5 minutes or it will die. I have my idle circut screws turned out to 3 turns, any less and it wont idle. I am assumming that the 850 with 4 corner idle will be a big improvement, just was not sure if we needed the choke. I am not planning on running it in the winter, so just a summer driver.
I am pretty sure that Jegs sells the holley electric units, should be easy to get later? I think keeping it simple is the best plan! I sure dont mind warming the car up, sounds like music to my ears! Not sure if the neighbors across the street agree but what the h@$#!
I had the electric choke on my 750 for 2 years. It worked great when it was cold and settled down after about 2 minutes. My problem was when it was warm. If the car set for more then 10 minutes the choke would reset itself. It would fire up but stay at a high idle for a minute. Kind of felt stupid in the staging lanes at a high idle when the outside air is 80 degrees and the choke on. I removed it and it takes about 1 minute of feathering the throttle then it is OK. Try it off for a while you can always put one on later. I wished I had saved the 50 bucks
