Lady in a mini van started backing up and was about to hit my ‘81. I hit the horn to get her attention, but too late.
Must have hit the horn too hard, and the horn cover/button is now lose and it looks like there is a spring of some kind broken. The spring must be between the contacts under the horn button, as about any movement in the car, or just turning the steering wheel, will honk the horn. To stop this, had to pull the horn cover and use a plastic straw wedged in between a couple of metal rings.
Before I start taking the assembly a part, what do I need to look for and which part is most likely broken?
If you go to http://www.corvettefaq.com and look under Steering. Download the picture entitled: Steering Wheel and Horn Parts 1977-82 T&T Column Picture. It has your steering wheel and horn parts exploded out. I think you will find that the Upper Horn Contact 3949103 is probably the part that is broke. It is still available from GM dealers. List is $22.77.
FYI, I found in my horn assembly the little spring under the contact button which contacts the rotating area of the steering assembly to be smashed (unsprung) so I used a spring from an ink pen, sounds kinda bubbaish but it works :smash:
Dis-connect the battery,Pull off the cap(button), take out the tree screws holding the contact ring in place, Remove the plate. You will find that there are three plastic rivits, some or all may be broken. Remove the old rivits. You have a flat plate, an insulator, a wobble plate and another plate on top. Get some 8-32 nylon screws (you can use metal nuts with the nylon screws) at a local hobby shop or good hardware store and re-assemble everything and put it back on the wheel hub. It should work like new. :smash: :smash:
The spring you are taking about is the upper horn contact. Mine didn't work because it was missing and I bought a horn repair kit from Mid America and it solved the problem. Also, if the plastic rivets are gone, I used "liquid Nails" to connect the horn cap to the metal retainer. Works like new.
