I want true duals with no cats my car is a 80 so I don't think a muffler shop will touch it here in NJ. So I guess that I will do it myself. Is there a system that will bolt on a 80 . I plan on stock ext manifolds and flowmaster 40s but the mystery is what to do in between the manifolds and mufflers what do with the trans crossmember can I get a pipe under it on the driver side I really need some help here I feel lost. Is there an easy way to do this. Can I use a system from a 74
I've got 2.5" duals, H balance pipe, no cats, headers and flowmaster 40 series on my '80. Here is how I did it. I bought a used 1976 dual hole trans cross member (I think 68-79 had dual hole style cross members) because there is not enough clearence to run the pipe under the stock '80 trans cross member. It was also expensive to have someone modify/weld the '80 cross memeber. Also, make sure you get the trans mounting bracket (perch) that fits the older style dual hole cross member. I found both used on the forum. The old style cross member bolts to the same holes. You may have to elongate the holes to get it to fit.
I had a shop custom bend the pipes and install the H pipe, mufflers and 3" chrome tips. It will be the same cost or cheaper than a bolt on system because most guys I talked to said that those bolt on systems required modifications and that costs time and money. Ask around and you should be able to find a shop that will put the exhaust on with no cats.
Thanks RJ nice site and nice car.So now I need to find a dual hole cross member and perch(pre 80 C3) were the 4 spd and auto cross members the same.I will round up all the parts I need first .does anyone Know what the exhaust manifold pipe size is on a 80 L48 2" or 2.5" does any one have a cross member they might want to sell :)
I had true duals with 40 flowmasters put on my 79 and had no problem here in Michigan getting a shop to put them on providing the cats were already off the car. I think your going to have more of a time getting the crossmember fixed to have the second hole for the pipe than anything. I will say one thing i like the sound of the 40's, it's not too loud and has a nice sound when you get on it. :yesnod:
