Default motor mount question

Okay I'm changing my motor mounts with stock ones from the local auto parts store one. Noticed several different brands that have a wider spacing Then the stock ones which are 2.5 inches across. I'm talking about the width of frame where the motor mounts bolt to. Has anyone else had this happen?

These are the measurements that I found, let's see if someone else can confirm that they are correct.

Yes, I had the same problem. I took them back for a exchange and they said that I had the correct part per their catalog. Returned them and went to another store. Same thing. The third store had the correct ones.

I would also highly recommend you obtain the ones like Peterbuilt shows in his thread. They are better than the earlier and often more common ones available and more like the ones that Chevrolet redesigned after their fiasco in 1969 when they did a recall. They are stronger and less prone to breakage.

Good luck... GUSTO

Highly recommend using one of the Forum Sponsors.

Pretty sure one of them has "heavy duty" mounts which are a bit better than the store bought. You may also want to look and see if NAPA has the heavy duty mounts. Dimensions are the same with thicker steel. I used the heavy duty mounts while I looked for original GM. Go with the newer type safety mounts. There is a reason they are called safety mounts. When they fail the motor still stays in the car. My Dad bought a brand new 68 Impala Convertible back in the day. A motor mount failed and the motor basically feel to the ground in the middle of Philadelphia with my mom 7 months pregnant. 1970 was the first year for the safety mounts.

I finally found a pair of GM mounts and will be installing them shortly. They are not cheap!

None of the after market mounts compare favorably with the GM mounts long since discontinued.

You could also go with moroso solid mounts . They fit nicely and never need to be replaced. And if your making good power its worth the safety factor.
