Default electric help requested

I just finished installing a new dash wiring harness on my 68 convert. The 20 amp fuse on the courtesy light circuit was blown using the old harness and promptly blew when I powered up the new harness. Can some one confirm that the following are the only things on that 20 amp circuit: 1) right courtesy light, 2)cigar lighter, 3)clock, 4)left courtesy light and 5)courtesy light in rear convertible compartment. My eyes got blurry following the wiring diagram, but I think I got everything. New harness wires should be OK, but two items I did not change I need to check- the old cigar lighter and 2) rear wiring harness wires going to the courtesy light in the rear convert compartment. Anything I forgot? My first step will be to disconnect the rear wiring harness plug and see if the fuse blows or not with that circuit removed. That should narrow it down (I hope). Thanks in advance. Ron-

I'll confirm that.. that is all there is on that circuit.

You should up-plug the lighter and see if the issue goes away, then unplug the clock next. What ever is taking out the fuse is a dead short for sure.

Also.. I have a tracer schematic at this link... it will save on those eyeballs. You copy this picture and then paste/save it in your paint program. Then use the paint program to color trace the wires. http://repairs.willcoxcorvette.com/w...ire-tracer.png

"I have a tracer schematic " WOW! I have one of those laminated 11x 17 diagrams, but it is not as easy as yours. I suspect my wiring issue is the rear courtesy light. The PO had the wires all balled up and stuffed under the carpet. I found them two weeks ago, but did not trace them to look for breaks or shorts. I almost left the cigar lighter not connected to the new harness, since I do not smoke. Looking in the bottom of the lighter tube, I could not tell whether everything was OK. I may just leave that disconnected also, including the light for the ashtray- there is no where to fasten the light and no opening for the light to go thru. Clock should be OK, it is new and worked on old harness. Gotta love old wiring.

You could take the front to rear connector loose and then try it again.. see if the fuse blows.. I just said go to the lighter first because they are prone to issues when they get older and/or something can fall inside and short it out.

Knowing now that you've looked in there and that the clock previously worked.... I'd pull the plug on the rear and see if the fuse pops.

Success! Disconnected rear harness and cigar lighter- still blew the fuse. Found the left bulb socket for convenience light was shorting out. fixed that and now everything works. finished the rear compartment light (68 convertible) and expected it would be controlled by the door jamb switches. It is not. The hot wire to the rear compartment light is hot all the time, even key off. Was there a separate switch for the rear light? The AIM, my wiring diagram and the owners manual mention a switch, but do not show it or its location. The PO had all the wires balled up under the carpet, so there is nothing from the original installation to go by. I may just add a small toggle switch to the quarter panel trim piece that can be turned on when needed. Semi-bubba fix, except I make all my electrical connections by soldering and using shrink tubing. RA

The compartment lite on my 6t8 conv goes on with the door switch and also via the headlight switch. I could be wrong but the courtesy lights are hot at all times and the switches control the ground to complete the circuit. The headlight switch controls the brightness of the dash lites by rotating the ****, upon completion of **** rotation to the brightess, continue rotating the switch counter clockwise and interior lites come on. That could be the switch you see in the diagram. I'd suspect that the return wire from rear lamp is not connected to the plug assy [front to rear harness]. T

The lamps are hot waiting for ground from either the door switch or the headlamp switch.

Morning RA. Not sure if 68's are the same but on my 69 the rear cabin or compartment light is also controlled by the under hood alarm switch. Why anyone would want the interior light on every time the hood is opened is beyond me but that's the way they made them. Check out that switch on the cowl as it's the same as the door jamb switches and controls the rear light as well as the alarm.
