Most times, my power windows don't work right after I start the engine.
However, it seems when I drive for a long distance, after shutting off and restarting, they won't start up for 5-10 minutes.
Very annoying problem, when I park somewhere, raise the windows, then have to drive in 90+ degree weather with both windows up.
I noticed this on a recent 300 mile drive, it occurred going both directions, in all kinds of different weather. (Range went from 60-90 degrees.)
The car would have been driven for 2-3 hours when this problem started.
Re: Interesting problem with power windows. (Pacin'California)
then only problem ive ever had was a bad switch. it had similar symptoms. but a bit more erratic. there are window relays under the consol by the switches. they might be the problem. not sure though. at least it will give you a start on the trouble shooting. hopefully someone more experienced can give more detail

ttt.
Neither switch works for the same interim, and the relay was replaced <1 year ago.
Perhaps it gets hot when ran, and takes longer for the relay to "let" the windows open? I'm not sure exactly the function of the relay. Maybe someone could enlighten me?

Check out the switches by first cleaning them with contact spray cleaner and see if they improve. I couldn't get my driver's side widow down after it went up. I didn't think it wa a motor problem; thought it was a switch problem. Reversed the switches and the cleaned all the contacts with contact spray cleaner. Worked like a champ then cleaned the contacts on the motors-been working great ever since. just a thought.

good point about contact cleaner. uncouple connections and clean.
what a relay does is this....
the motor that moves the window mechanism requires a large amount of current. but you dont want a lot of current running through the switch. the relay acts as a switch. you place the relay between the motor and the power source. it can handle the large amounts of current. the switch is operated by a small current that turns on the relay allowing current to work the motor. the small current is controled by your window switches on the consoul.
