I removed the luggage rack from my '75 and found 8 rubber stoppers in the wholes where the rack was secured to the fiberglass. The stoppers do not want to come out and I don't want to force them, however, to have a great paint job, they will need to be removed.
Does anyone have any good ideas how to remove these rubber stoppers?
I'm sure that you know that no matter how many times you fill and paint the area, the dimples will always come back to haunt you. I've never seen a luggage rack removed successfully and undetectably. Chuck
Chuck is right!!! I have tried it several times with less than great results.9 The neatest trick I have seen was some painted to match buttons in the holes. Not stock but very clean looking.
Mine came right out (accessible from the interior). I ground out around the holes a bit, slapped some duct tape underneath as a "stopper" and filled the holes with West Systems (epoxy & filler). Finish with body filler. Final paint isn't on yet but sealer/primer looks fine. Just remembered that I also removed the security lock in the driver's fender using the same technique and it looks fine. Not a big deal to fill a hole IMO.
I did mine with glass cloth on the underside, epoxy filler and chopped glass in the holes. I finished with evercoat polyester glazing putty and a few coats of primer. Looked and felt perfect. I left it sit for two weeks and re-sanded. Still looke perfect... Within two weeks after the final clearcoat was applied I could see every spot. It still looks better than that stupid rack!! :D
Hey VolVette: Are you interested in selling your carrier? If so is it a 6 or 8 hole, and in great condition.... just thought i'd ask

Eddie,
Sorry, I am just removing the rack because I am painting my '75. I considered taking it off but because it is difficult to make the holes unnoticeable, I am going to put it back on.
