Default cylinder head

I am removing the cylinder head on the 79 I am reviving to extract broken exhaust manifold mount bolts. The car has 47k on it: any suggestion on how to clean them without taking them apart? The rocker arms does have some build on them.

Once its off you can spray a degreaser all over and scrub the hell out of it with various brushes, blast it all off with a garden hose.

I would just use a parts washer and clean them like anything else using kerosene or mineral spirits, blow off and re-lube everything. BUT, if you've already gotten them off, why not at least change out the valve seals? personally I would also lap the valves, even with low mileage, you're already there so may as well take advantage of it. also the seals can get hard and leak at that age, regardless of mileage...

btw, if you don't have the tools, local parts stores will rent the valve spring compressor, or you can buy one for <$20...

I decided to take them apart, since the head gasket set I got contain most of the seals I need. I am going to replace the valve seals and yes lap them as well. Haven't done that type of work in a while.

I recently did something similar to my heads. Lap them with a drill and a piece of fuel line, there're some good YouTube videos on it. I cleaned everything with brake cleaner. While I was at it I cleaned the tops of the pistons and the ring at the top of the cylinder.

Also, while its out, check your distributor for end play.
