I can't mount my MSD coil horizontal b/c I was informed that it will cause it to burn out. I'm having EXTREME difficulty mounting in on the fire wall verticaly. Does anyone know where I could mount it??
I can't find a mounting bracket for the mounting point on the intake manifold...If anyone has a spare I'd be glad to send them 10-15.00$ for it..
Aaron,
You can get a vertical (or horizontal) coil bracket from Jeg's or Summit. Granted, they aren't factory but they are nicely chromed and are very inexpensive.
Who told you that you can't mount a coil horizontally? Unless there is some prohibition issued from the manufacturer (which I doubt), you can mount a coil in any position you can think of. Did you know that Ford traditionally mounted their coils horizontally? Coil postion is a matter of economy of space, not longevity.
I think Aaron is getting this from this post... http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zero...901631#3901631. I have been watching as well as my Blaster II is horizontal also. I have only run the setup for 100 miles or so. Also, if someone has info on running a points distributer without the "balast resister" that MSD supplies. I am not running one and wondering what problems I might have due to this.

When I installed my Blaster 2 coil, and took the resistor out my points went away in about 15 minutes. You NEED that resistor.

Re: Need help with coil. (DollaGreen)
Been following these threads, mounted mine horizontal, MSD recommends you mount them vertical. Wish they would use stronger language in there instructions like " MOUNT THIS COIL VERTICAL - If you don't you will fry the coil and blow up your expensive MSD 6AL box, you dufus "
Anyway it's hard to see in the picture but in order to mount mine vertical I had to move it out from the firewall. I used a wooden block and painted it black, you can see it if you look close at the chrome bracket. It seems to have solved the problem :D
On a 73 and probably a 74, there is a v shaped area on the right side middle of the firewall where the ac electrical and washer lines pass through. You can bridge this with a piece of strap and mount the coil there.
I know that this is not what you wanted to hear, but when I bought my 1974, it had been fitted with a 1975 L48 engine and therefore had an HEI distributor.
Because of the mechanical tach drive, I purchased an HEI tach drive distributor base and fitted the '75 cap and coil to it. It runs fine and the tacho works too. BTW I liked the good photos the other guys submitted, I hope to show some of mine before too long.
I would do that. Because HEI's are nice. But, I don't really care for the over-all look of them. The huge caps and all that. I like the look of a small cap and dist with external coils. I'm going to get a MSD pro-billet and 6AL someday. A coil that doesn't make you face this problem is the MSD blaster SS coil. It's just a small little box. But, I heard that the Blaster 2 coil is better for point type distributors.
Most canister type coils are oil filled ... and should be mounted vertically in order for the oil to properly cover (and cool) the coils' windings ... this is especially true if coil's primary power supplied by CD box (ie MSD 6). A few canister coils are epoxy filled (ie MSD Hi Vibration) and can be mounted in any position with no cooling issues. The newer generation of coils have a laminated "e-core" or "c-core" (ie GM HEI or later model Ford or MSD blaster SS & HVC) and can also be mounted in any position. Regardless, move the coil away from the heat generated by earlier stock mountings on intake ... unless subject to NCRS judging.
I thought about that too. Coils aren't the coolest thing on the motor and putting it on a hot intake doesn't make too much sense. I'm thinking of taking some metal and welding it to make the shape I need and just POR15ing it Chevy Orange. I'll post sim pics.

Re: Need help with coil. (Aaron-74)
Got this back from a MSD tech:
Dear Sir;
The Blaster 2 coil is oil-filled and must be mounted vertically when used
with our CD ignitions. The reason is that when turned on it's side, the oil
will expose one side of the windings which can cause them to overheat and
arch internally. DO NOT mount it horizontally.

I'm trying to design a braket for the coil itself that's a couple more inches out so there's no interference and it can be mount verticaly.

Re: Need help with coil. (Aaron-74)
I might go and get that other coil MSD has the Blaster SS , looks like you can mount it anyway you want and it will probably fit perfect in that space on the firewall, anyone know the one I am talking about, seems to be about the same price. I wonder why more people haven't installed them ? Would this coil be a good substitute ?
Anybody want to buy a slightly used Blaster 2 coil with a chrome bracket, cheap ?
Quote"The Blaster 2 coil is oil-filled and must be mounted vertically when used with our CD ignitions."
What are "CD ignitions". If you are running the standard points ignition does this still apply?
Also, a mechanic I have talked to does recomend the balast resister? Is this required for the points setup that would be included on a Lars distributer? Lars?
