I've got a leak from the rear seal, wondering if I can replace while still on the car? I am not sure if bushing is worn and haven't tried to pull the driveshaft to see if I can tell. If not, any ideas what it would cost at a shop to have both done? Also, what is the most widely used gear oil for an M21. My car is a '71. Thank you.
the seal can be done in the car, below is a link to it being done on a 67 but should be the same. The bushing would require a special tool to my knowledge. Any brand name gear oil should be fine GL4 80/90. Just a guess on time would be 3 hours for both multiplied by the hourly rate

I was able to do the tailshaft bushing while in the car with a special tool, but my trans is the earlier 27-spline output shaft, so the tool would be different for yours.

I had .125" end play with the drive shaft I stalled on my m20. I drove mine onto planks supported by cement blocks. Made sure it was super stable as I didnt want to be jerking on the seal on jack stands. I got the puller from ebay. Used a pick to punch holes in the seal as there was no lip to pry it out with a screwdriver. The puller pulled it out nice and smooth.
I put the old bushing on the slip yoke with the new one on the end to press in the new bushing into place. It was the easiest way to keep it aligned. Worked great.
No lip
Punched pick into old seal
Snap on tool makes it easy
Well greased yoke slides new bushing in to keep it aligned
Old bushing with 1 1/2 pvc pipe to keep it tight to seat the new bushing as its is far in the housing
Seated

Thanks so much, pictures really tell the story. Unclear at this point if have play around the bushing, was hoping to sneak by with just rear seal. Haven't seen the exact snap on tool on ebay but have looked just in case. Really helpful reply, thanks again.
