A semi local guy I know had a NOS manual steering centerlink on ebay a couple of weeks ago at an opening bid of $99.99 well NO ONE bid so he puts it back on at $49.99 and two idiots (Corvette idiots obviously!!) bid it up to $118. (and I thought I was NUTS to bid $71) What they didn`t want it for $100. a couple of weeks ago?? but are happy to pay $118 now. Can someone PLEASE explain this phenomenon to me because I am lost. Besides it being a NON wearing part that is either straight (and good) or bent (and junk) a somewhat confused redvetracr
i used to buy a lot of trading cards on ebay....once you want something and bid on it, it is in your mind already yours. when it gets outbid, you feel enraged that someone else has the top bid. so what do you do, you out bid them until it gets way over the price of what it is worth....
Sorry redvetracr, I can't explain it. I was amazed at the rare 68 non-air console shift plate that went for over $300.
That was my plate that was sold on ebay. :D I never thought it would go that high. I picked it up at carlisle. I will not tell you whay I paid for it. You just never know what things will go for.
There's a "science" to determining the opening bid of any item...just like at a "real live" auction. IF the part is worth about $100.00 and the opening bid is $100.00, I don't think many would bid on it. BUT, if the part is a $100.00 item, and the bidding begins at half of that, it doesn't surprise me that it sold for more than the "original" listing.
I've bought and sold well over 300 items on EBAY over the past 2 or 3 years. Amazing results...in "both" directions. I've sold $50.00 items for $150.00, BUT on the other side of the coin, I've had $150.00 items sell for $50.00, OR more commonly have had no bidding or interest. :) It "cuts both ways" Chuck
I hear you TonyQT! It was a nice looking shifter plate.
Chuck, ebay is great! My 68 project came with alot of non-68 parts. I've made back half of what I paid for the car by selling those parts off and I still have some more to sell. Living in Pensacola isn't a hotbed for corvette
parts and ebay has helped me get to the market. I just have know when and not to pull the trigger when bidding. The free market at it's best!
I've also bought a part from you!
Yeah..there are many uninformed people out there. I have purchased a few new parts at considerable savings from ebay. But you have to bid with a Zip/Riks/Ecklers etc.. catalog infront of you to compare pricing.

One of my favorite Ebay stories was generated by a forum member a couple of years ago. He "won"? the bidding on a Holley "Double Pumper", which turned out to be a worn out 3310 vacuum secondary carb that had had a it's linkage bolted to make the secondaries mechanical. Obviously, it didn't have "double pumps" as advertised and to make matters worse, it was a total pos that had no business ever being put on an engine again. I don't recall the exact price this guy "won" the bidding at, but it was slightly higher than the same carb could have been bought new, in the box, and with a warranty! At the time, my advice had been to cut his losses and just buy a new carb. It was only after spending over another $100 in trying to make the pos work that our bargain hunter decided that he couldn't afford to "save" any more money and did exactly that.
sure they didnt see it the first time, many ebayers only bid according to whats currently up for auction, with rare items prices can vary alot, many don't check completed items searches either to see what they usually go for...
I don't get it. I bought a new radio off ebay for my Grand Prix for $140 and sold my old BROKEN one for $95. The volume **** was messed up and the display didn't work. I was very explicit about it and someone was happy to pay $95 for it. I was happy to just not have it sit on my garage shelf forever. I was thinking $15-20 tops!!
It's just luck.. You can put the same item one week and get $500 and the following week you would only get $100.. It's almost like playing in the lottery...

i couldn't agree with you more. Results always vary with Ebay. Thats probably the good thing about it though. If it where consistant it would be a dissapointment!
