I was shopping for a 700R4 transmission to replace the TH350 in my 79 vette this morning and was thrown a bit of a curve. The guy at the transmission place wanted to know if i wanted the electronic speedometer connection or the speedometer cable connection... I thought all 700R4's were the same and had the cable connection for the speedometer connection. Could he have possibly been referring to the new 4L60E electronic version as the 700R4? I would appreceiate your thoughts on this.
Thanks...

Some cars use(d) an electronic speedometer transducer. Any car that had a digital dash does not use a cable. 700R-4's come both way.. 4L60E's are computer controlled versions of a 700R4. There are also 4L60's (no E) That were only made for a year or two.
My 700R4 came out of a '92 Chevy truck. It had the transducer for electric speedometers. Very simple to convert over to cable drive.
I removed the tail housing, removed the parts for the electric speedo transducer and replaced them with the appropriate drive gear and driven gear setup for my cable driven speedometer.
This picture shows you how to determine the proper gear selection for your setup. 4L60 and 700R4 are the same.
